Embodying Change with Others

The next big wave of change in community is in how we show up, recognize and gain the most from the diversity within the group. We teach individuals and organizations how to activate their unique strengths for themselves and those around them, listening deeply to the body for guidence.

Tanya Birl-Torres has taken her 15 years of experience as a Broadway performer, choreographer and movement director and melded it with her love and passion for justice and change on the systemic level. With a deep and grounded sense of presence and urgency, Tanya uses the subtle yet potent power of drawing inwards to provoke curiosity, promote healing and empower oneself to create change beyond what we have been taught and into personal truth telling and embodied experience. Through reflection, moving metaphor and a process called Presencing (The Presencing Institute and Social Presenting Theater at MIT), participants are encouraged to become the change that they wish to see manifest.

The BEHOLD workshop with Tanya Birl-Torres brought me right back to the basics. It reminded me that I need to breathe deeply. Breath is the bedrock of everything. Breath animates all that I am and all that I do. I am compromised if I don’t take the time to truly breathe.

Tanya has a gift to magically weave body work and social issues, both on a micro and macro level. As a professional dancer for more than 20 years, my body had only known how to execute what had been asked of it. During Tanya’s workshop, my body was finally given permission to speak and move in a truly authentic and organic way, while also processing the journey it’s taken, both in this life and the lives of my ancestors. Tanya’s work is not only therapeutic but inspiring.
